In this post, I’m sharing styling tips and some of my favorite living room lamps from Target that combine style, function, and affordability, so you can brighten your space without breaking the bank.

Styling Tips for Using Lamps
When choosing living room lamps, consider these simple styling tips to create a balanced, inviting space…
-
Pick the right lamp height: Aim for lamps around 24–27 inches tall for side tables, and taller floor lamps for corners or entryways to provide ample light and proportional scale. In my formal living room my lamp felt a little too short so I sat it on top of 2 stacked books and it adds height.
-
Mix and match materials: Layer different textures like ceramic paired with wood or sleek metal combined with glass to add visual interest and depth to your room.
-
Choose the perfect bulb: Opt for warm white bulbs (around 2700K) to create a cozy, inviting glow that enhances your living room’s atmosphere and makes it feel more elevated.
-
Match your style: Match your lamp with your design aesthetic (e.g., modern, coastal, traditional).
-
Consider base & shade shape: Round shades for softness, tapered shades for traditional appeal, drum shades for modern looks.
-
Go symmetrical or a-symmetrical: double up your lighting and do a lamp on each side table for balance or consider one lamp in your favorite spot, creating a vignette!
Here’s another good visual of how books were used for decor and to add height to what would have been a short lamp on this tabletop. The lamp does not have to be the same size as other objects on the table but added height gives it balance.
One of the sofas in this space is anchored by 2 side tables that each have a table lamp. It would have been overpowering and too matchy-matchy to go with the same look on the other side so they mixed it up with a floor lamp and what looks like a vignette next to the entry door with another table lamp in a different shape and color.
This shows that you can mix and match symmetrical and asymmetrical in large open floor plan concepts.
Using a lamp with a natural material like wood or rattan ties in beautifully with these green velvet chairs and black accents. They also went asymmetrical here with just the one lamp but the space is visually balanced.
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and finishing your room’s look. These tips and stylish, affordable lamps from Target make it easy to achieve a designer-quality feel. Whether you’re refreshing a small corner or completely reimagining your living room, adding the right lamp might be the simple upgrade your space needs.
