Are you looking for easy kid’s room character ideas? These are some simple additions we added that could certainly help and stand the test of time as your kid grows.

A few years ago we renovated our soon-to-be daughter’s bedroom but it was going to be her nursery. We added a wainscotting to the walls and kept it fairly plain because I knew I’d want to come back and add layers as she started to grow into it. If I’m being completely honest, I really didn’t know what I wanted at the time and I wanted more time to plan it out.

I knew that I just wanted to add more character—to make the space feel softer, more personal, and better suited for how she would actually use it. With just a few simple changes—including peel and stick wallpaper—we are going to give her room an entirely new feel.

If you’re decorating a kid’s room and want it to be both pretty and practical, here are some kid’s room character ideas to consider.

kid's bedroom wainscotting

This is what we started with. I love this and I owe it all to my husband – he does all of our renovation work and is very hands on. It’s ironic because these walls were covered in wallpaper from floor to ceiling when we bought the house. And let me tell you, it was extremely tough getting that old wallpaper off of these walls. I spent many nights and weekends on that project alone.

When I told my husband that I thought adding wallpaper to the space above the wainscotting would add a ton of character in this room he thought I was joking!

How we added character: Small Changes, Big Impact

  • Mounted wooden pegs painted the same color as the wainscotting to help keep the floor clutter-free
  • Plan to add peel & stick wallpaper to add a feminine, patterned layer

Both of these changes are small on their own, but together they’ll make the room feel more personalized, cozy, and functional.

These are the pegs we went with. This was a great budget-friendly kid’s room idea! I have something similar in our kitchen pantry and I love the look. This was an easy decision because I’ve seen so much inspiration around wooden knobs making a come back and these wooden pegs, when painted the same color as the wall, are too! So that’s exactly what I did.

I painted these the same color as the wainscotting (Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige) and they turned out exactly as I had imagined. The only challenge was trying to determine how far apart to mount them.

I ended up going with a distance of 8 inches apart because I wanted to use up this entire space. Not to mention the vertical slats of the wainscotting were 32 inches, on center, so this allowed me to center them there as a starting point and then equally space them. I tend to eye-ball it at first and then step back and measure.

This is the corner behind her bedroom door so it’s sometimes hidden by the door making it the perfect place for her to hang accessories, bags, jackets, etc.

That turned out exactly as I had envisioned so then it was on to the wallpaper decision. I had ordered 4 samples from Loomwell that I was anxiously waiting to test. These are all peel and stick options so I easily stuck them to the wall so I could compare them each against the paint color and get a sense for the pattern in the space.

If you work with paint you know that you have to see the color in all light – morning, afternoon, and evening – to be able to make the ‘right’ choice. I’d say it works the same with any wall covering. And having a peel and stick wallpaper sample is perfect because I can stick them here and come back to them throughout the day to see how they look. Not to mention these samples are the perfect size to give a sense of the scale of the pattern and how it repeats!

Why Peel and Stick Wallpaper Is Perfect

You don’t need to commit to a full-room paint job or call in a contractor. Peel and stick wallpaper gives you:

  • Instant impact without the mess
  • Flexibility—remove or switch styles as tastes change
  • A weekend DIY project you can actually enjoy

This was especially appealing for my daughter’s room, where I wanted something fun, feminine, and still neutral enough to grow with her.

The Wallpaper Brand I Love (And Highly Recommend)

There are a number of reasons why I come back to Loomwell every time I’m in the market for wallpaper:

  • Thick and high-quality – no bubbling or tearing
  • Easy to install – perfect for beginners
  • Beautifully designed – think curated patterns that feel high-end, not overly trendy
  • Removable – so I can change it up in a few years without damage

These were my 4 top choices but after sampling them on the wall in that space I’ve decided to get a few more samples. They have such great variety of options that I’m having a hard time narrowing it down to just one

If you use a Loomwell wallpaper to add character or completely change the look of your space please share it with me, I’d love to see! I’m always looking for inspiration for my next project.

Here are links to the samples I’m sharing in case you are interested. I love all 4!

The first sample (far left) and last (far right) are actually the same pattern but in different sizes and colors. Keep this in mind if you like a pattern on their site but wish it were larger/smaller – this may be an option.

Now I’m going to peel some of these off and stick them in other rooms that I’m planning to do wallpaper in. I’m headed back to Loomwell to order a few more samples for this room. I’ll be back to share an update soon, if you’re interested!
